Waiting for Banner

An error occurred while waiting for the remote server to send the initial greeting banner.

There are three common errors at this point in the mail transaction;

• (Socket timed out)
after waiting a long time, the local server gave up.
This is often the result of a spam attack against the remote server, though there are many other possibilities.


• (Socket closed unexpectedly)
The remote server closed the connection for no known reason.
This is usually because the remote server has a problem, though it could be because they've chosen to block the local server, or some other unknown issue.


• 421 [some text]
The remote server refused the connection, and provided some possibly helpful text.
The text provided usually explains why they refused the connection, but not always.
